Mission Support and Test Services (MSTS) needed to transition its IP-enabled phone system to IPv6. This effort required a comprehensive discovery, design, and implementation plan to ensure a seamless migration. A major challenge was identifying federal information systems that could not be converted to IPv6 and developing a strategy for replacing or retiring them. MSTS also required a detailed network diagram to map existing infrastructure as well as a complete inventory of all devices, categorized by compliance, in order to fully understand the scope of the transition.
Solution
Agiletek Solutions delivered a detailed and actionable IPv6 transition plan tailored to MSTS’s needs. The team created a comprehensive network diagram that outlined security boundaries and produced a global asset inventory categorizing all devices according to their IPv6 compliance. For systems that could not be converted, Agiletek identified and justified those limitations, then provided a clear schedule for their replacement or retirement.
To ensure long-term success, Agiletek reviewed existing infrastructure, address plans, and proposed architecture to highlight potential risks and red flags that could impact the transition. This careful analysis culminated in a complete IPv6 Transition Strategy Statement, offering MSTS a structured and well-defined roadmap for moving forward.
Technologies Used
The project leveraged a range of specialized network management and planning tools, including NetDot, OpenNetAdmin, HaCi, Racktables, IPAT, and spcalc. Together, these technologies supported accurate inventory management, address planning, and architectural analysis to ensure a smooth and well-documented transition.
Results
Agiletek’s systematic and comprehensive approach provided MSTS with a clear, actionable strategy for transitioning to IPv6. The network diagrams and device inventory gave the client complete visibility into their environment, while the transition strategy and retirement schedule ensured a smooth and well-planned migration. By proactively identifying potential risks and non-compliant systems early in the process, Agiletek enabled MSTS to avoid costly disruptions and positioned the organization for a secure, scalable, and future-ready network infrastructure.
